How Does Exercise, Diet, and Mental Health Affect Your Health Wellbeing?

First off, let’s talk about physical activity. Not only are there physical benefits of exercise, but mental ones too. Exercise releases endorphins, which is the natural “happy drug” that your body produces. Personally, exercise has helped me find a balance in my life and this has made a huge difference in my lifestyle. Exercise has been proven to help with low self esteem and depression. After hearing all the positive side effects of exercise, it sounds like a no brainer to start. However, I know it is easier said than done. Getting motivated is hard, and getting in a routine can help. Build those thirty minutes into your day, even squeezing in 15 minutes can make a difference. It also helps to find an exercise that you enjoy. There are so many different exercise options to choose from, and it can be a fun journey to figure out what works for you.Try taking classes or listening to fun music to pump you up.

Secondly, diet can have an impact on your health. It is not necessary for people in the United States to rely so much on animal-based protein because there are so many other ways to get protein in a diet other than just killing animals to be eaten. In fact, the amount of animal-based protein, according to a study conducted on the Sources and Amounts of Animal, Dairy, and Plant Protein Intake of US Adults in 2007–2010, found that US adults consumed animal, dairy, and plant protein were 46%, 16%, and 30% respectively. This demonstrates the large impact of an animal-based diet in the United States. This large percent of animal-based protein consumption may have detrimental consequences to one’s health. In a prospective cohort study that compared the diets and health of meat-eaters to vegetarians to lacto-ovo-vegetarians to vegans, the vegan diets seem to offer additional protection for obesity, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular mortality. Vegan diets have also been studied to provide anti-inflammatory properties and can be even healthier for humans than the standardized American Heart Association recommended diet.

Therefore, go vegan and protect your health, because no one else will!

Lastly, the impact mental wellbeing has on your health. Many of you may ask yourselves, what is mental health? Mental health is an important part of one’s overall health and well-being. Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make healthy choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood.

It’s important to remember that a person’s mental health can change over time, depending on many factors. There is no single cause for mental illness. When things in life become overwhelming, one’s mental health could be severely impacted. For example, early adverse life experiences, medical conditions, genes, drug and alcohol use, economic hardships, caring for ill relatives, and feeling lonely or isolated may cause someone to experience poor mental health.

As I mentioned before, mental and physical health are equally important components of overall health. Mental illness, mainly depression, increases the risk for many types of physical health problems, explicitly long-lasting conditions like diabetes, stroke, and heart disease. For this reason we must take care of our minds just as much as our bodies.
